Candles smell good and all but why do you really need candles?
Candles can play an essential role in the effects of moods, stress levels, motivation, mental health, and more. Burning candles can help reduce stress, trigger past memories, promote relaxation, improve ones mood, and enhance a space. According to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Scientia Pharmaceutica, "in traditional medicine as well as in aromatherapy and herbal medicine, essential oils and fragrance compounds have been used for the treatments of various psychological and physical disorders such as headaches, pain, insomnia, eczema, stress-induced anxiety, depression and digestive problems." So, why might you need a candle for your space?
1. CALMS THE MIND
Floral and aromatic scents, like sage, lavender, peppermint, jasmine, and eucalyptus, contain calming properties that can promote relaxation.
2. STIMULATES OR TRIGGERS MEMORIES
Most agree that when we smell a certain scent, we sometimes are reminded of a past event, person, memory, or even our favorite holiday. According to an article written by Ashley Hamer, "Scents bypass the thalamus and go straight to the brain's smell center, known as the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb is directly connected to the amygdala and hippocampus", which might explain why a certain smell can trigger an intense emotion or memory.
3. ENHANCES A SPACE
Candles have the power to transform a space while creating comfort, lighting, focus, and a ton of smiles. By filling a room with a pleasing aroma, candles can create a welcoming atmosphere. However they can also be personal when you're creating a fragranced space for yourself, or both you and your partner.
