Ever walked into a room that smelled like layers? Not one candle doing all the work, but two
or three playing off each other so well you can't tell where one ends and the other begins? That's not an accident… that's candle layering, and once you start doing it,
you won't burn candles any other way.
Think of it like perfume. You wouldn't spray five conflicting scents and hope for the best. Instead, you build a base, then add something on top that complements it. Candles work the exact same way.
My go-to base: Santal. Santal is one of those scents that plays well with almost everything. It's warm and grounded without being loud, which makes it the perfect "base note" to burn alongside something else. My personal favorite move is Santal + any of our fall scents because it rounds out the sweetness and adds this soft, woodsy depth that makes the whole room feel cozier.
So how do you pick a pairing that actually works?
- Start with a base, not two loud scents. Pick one candle that's warm, woody, or musky (like Santal) to anchor the room. Save the punchier, sweeter, or more complex scent for the other candle.
- Watch the intensity, not just the "notes." Two strong scents fighting for attention will overpower each other fast. Pair a bold scent with something more subtle so they blend instead of compete.
- Stay in season, loosely. You don't have to match scents perfectly, but a cozy fall candle and an ultra-fresh, beachy scent are going to clash. Stick to scents that feel like they belong in the same room.
- Give them space to breathe. Don't put your two candles right next to each other. A little distance lets the scents mix in the air instead of just muddying together up close.
- Trust your nose over any "rule." Every nose reads scent differently. What smells perfectly balanced to me might feel too strong or too soft to you.
Pairing "rules" can only get you so far, because scent is personal. What smells cozy and grounding to me might feel completely different to you. That's exactly why we're such big believers in building your own custom set instead of guessing off someone else's list (even mine!)
